Paediatric Burns Victim Support
Restoring Hope and Mobility: Supporting Children with Burns and Orthopedic Needs
Severe burns and orthopedic conditions in children require highly specialized care—care that is often unavailable through the public health system and financially out of reach for many families. Without timely intervention, these children can face lifelong physical deformities, emotional trauma, and significant barriers to returning to school and everyday life.
The Rotary Club of Barbados South (RCBS) with partner Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) through its Community Grant Programme, is proud to support the vital work of the Barbados Burns and Orthotics Charitable Trust (BBOCT), helping to ensure that vulnerable children receive the treatment and rehabilitation they need to heal, recover, and thrive.
Bridging the Gap in Care
Through this initiative, RCBS assists BBOCT in providing essential medical and rehabilitative support, including:
- Custom-made burn scar pressure garments
- Orthotic appliances for orthopedic conditions
- Additional therapeutic and rehabilitation services
These interventions are critical for children whose families cannot afford the high cost of treatment, ensuring that no child is left behind due to financial constraints.
Why This Support Matters
Pressure garments play a crucial role in the recovery process for children with severe burns. Made from specialized spandex-like material, these garments are carefully measured and tailored to fit like a second skin. They must be worn almost continuously—removed only for bathing—and replaced every 3–4 months as children grow.
Over a typical treatment period of 18–24 months, children may require multiple sets of garments, along with additional supports such as silicone elastomers and splints to manage complex scarring. Throughout this journey, consistent monitoring by medical professionals ensures optimal healing and functional recovery.
Without these interventions, children are at high risk of developing severe, deforming scars and long-term complications that can impact mobility, confidence, and quality of life.
Supporting the Whole Child and Family
Recovery from burns and orthopedic conditions extends beyond physical healing. The emotional toll on both children and their families can be profound—especially during the early, painful stages of treatment.
BBOCT plays a vital role in providing:
- Psychological support and counseling
- Peer support from families who have faced similar challenges
- Guidance to help families stay committed to demanding treatment routines
This holistic approach ensures that children are supported not only medically, but also emotionally and socially helping them reintegrate into school and community life with confidence.
Our Impact
Through this partnership, the programme received USD3,000 that provided direct assistance to 2 burn survivors and indirect support to their families and caregivers. This included material support, medical supplies, and follow-up engagement to assist with ongoing recovery needs.
