Children's Fun Day on International Day of Peace

On September 21st 2024, the Rotary Club of Barbados South hosted 31 children for a day of fun.  This was a rescheduled event as it was first attempted for Fathers' Day 2024.  This fun day benefitted children who have a relationship with the Prison Ministry Association as their fathers are incarcerated.  The event was held at the Guardian Sports Club on Collymore Rock.

Rotarians contributed to food, drinks and treats and showed up to play and interact with the children who ranged in age from 4 to 19.  They were chaperoned by representatives from the Prison Ministry Association.  This collaboration was brought to the club by PHF PP Hiranand Thani who was our direct link to the Association.

A good time was had by all. At the end of the event, each child left with a loot bag and a gift.  Additionally, a few of them were rewarded for their performance when they participated in individual events.

Previous Meeting Details
Wednesday September 4th 6:30pm Blue Horizon Hotel
   * After the usual formalities President Terry                     appraised us of the upcoming events.  She reminded
us of our upcoming obligations which included
         - Assistance on the Rotaract Reading Room                     project
         - The Virtual Meeting with the District Governor               on September 24th
         - The need to schedule a day to complete                       our tree planting exercise and
         - The presentation of tablets to our Agrokids                   schools
   * PP Hiranand was invited to give us details on our           upcoming community outreach.  On September             21st, the International Day of Peace, we are                 scheduled to host 30 children for a day of fun.  This       project is an initiative with the Prison Fellowship, as       the children we are expected to host are children           whose parents are incarcerated.  We were                     encouraged to give our full support to this project.

   * In Keeping with our "bridging the gap" theme                Director Ryan presented on the Rotary Foundation        and International Service.  He informed us of the          district expectations for Sustaining Members, Every        Rotarian Every Year (EREY) contributions, along            with the expectations for club contributions to the          Annual Fund and Polio Plus.  He connected these            items to club access to grant funds as well as                potential international service projects and how            this can foster relationships with other clubs                  through project collaboration.
   * This session triggered a number of questions so a          commitment was made to continue to educate the        club on the Rotary Foundation.

   * PP Michael Forde led us in the Rotary Grace and            recited the Objects of Rotary

Wednesday September 11th 12:30pm via Zoom
   * As usual, after the opening formalities, President            Terry reminded us of the upcoming events.                    Emphasis was placed on encouraging Rotarians to          participate in the Children's fun day, Dining in the          Dark and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
   * Director Glyne demonstrated how to navigate                Clubrunner in order to be reminded of upcoming            events and to find event locations.  He suggested          that Club Admin is committed to keeping the                information updated.
   * Director Ryan continued from where he left off in          the previous week with focus on International                Service. He highlighted some of the benefits to              attending the district conference including but not          limited to networking, finding opportunities to                collaborate, fellowship with Rotarians from other            countries and obtaining ideas to improve our club.
   * We were reminded of the early registration                    deadlines for both the 7030 District Conference and
the Rotary International Convention and                        encouraged begin to make arrangements to attend.
   * President Terry highlighted to us the funding                  opportunities that we were able to obtain from              attendance at the last district conference and                informed us of a humanitarian visit of 100+                  Rotarians scheduled for 2025, the purpose of which        is the identify opportunities for project collaboration
      and funding.

   * Director Ryan recited the 4 Way Test as Rotarian            Graham was absent

Wednesday September 18th 6:30pm via Zoom
   * This meeting was a special one as the main topic at        hand was about receiving grant funding that                  exceeded our expectation.
   * After the usual opening formalities were concluded,        President Terry gave us the amazing news that              funding for our Social and Emotional Learning Pilot        project was approved by the Massy Foundation.
   * The announcement was made even sweeter, when        she disclosed that the funding is conditional in that,
it is contingent on us adding 3 more schools to the        project.  By so doing, we will receive $150,000 to          cover the cost of the project for the next 2 years.
   * The board is now expected to meet to determine            the criteria for selection of the schools that will join        The Lodge School in this project.  Well done to all          concerned! PP Brian is the peace champion and            project lead.  Promotion and execution is expected        to begin in October.

Another successful Bridgetown feeding was held in Independence Square on September 30th 2024.  Special thanks to Rotarian Mechelle Lewis for handling it in my absence.  Thanks also to VP Trevor Sealy, PP Brian Lashley and PHF PP Hiranand Thani for providing the meals from RCBS. Thanks also to PP Prakash Mahtani, Rotarian Maurice Bailey and Rotarian Josephine Robinson who consistently show up to assist.  This month we also had Rotarians from RCBW who turned up to assist; always appreciated.  This session was extra special as PP Hiranand Thani was providing the food and serving on his birthday.  Happy birthday PP Hiro!!!!

The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, improving the environment, and alleviating poverty.

What impact can one donation have?

  • For as little as 60 cents, a child can be protected from polio.

  • $500 can launch an antibullying campaign and create a safe environment for children.

Rotary International
FACT SHEET

Rotary unites people from all continents and cultures who take action to deliver real, long-term solutions to our world’s most persistent issues. In communities across the globe, our 1.2 million members come together to strengthen their connections to friends and neighbors and their commitment to improving lives.

While our 45,000 clubs all share a commitment to community service, the experience, focus and dynamics of each club is unique. Becoming a Rotary member connects you with a diverse group of professionals who share your drive to give back.

Causes: Solving real problems takes real commitment and vision. Each year, Rotary members invest hundreds of millions of dollars and countless volunteer hours in sustainable, community-based solutions to promote health, peace, and prosperity in communities across the globe. Rotary combines global reach, local resources, and highly skilled volunteers with a funding structure that distributes US$200 million annually to provide clean water and sanitation, support education, prevent and treat disease, improve maternal and child health, grow local economies, promote peace, and protect the environment.

For more than 35 years, Rotary has been the driving force in the effort to end polio worldwide. Alongside our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we have achieved a 99.9 percent reduction in polio cases, with 12 cases of wild polio reported in 2023 compared with 350,000 a year in the late 1980s. Our members have contributed more than $2.7 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Today, just two countries continue to report cases of wild poliovirus, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

History: For 119 years, Rotary members have been addressing challenges around the world. It started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago (United States) attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on Feb. 23, 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of its members.
