Club Meeting Recap - 15th Feb
On Wednesday, February 15th, the club held a Valentine's themed session. During the meeting we looked at the various ways people go about choosing a life partner. We read and compared poetry going back to Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s, how do I love thee to modern day poems...
On February 14th, PP Katrina was invited to be a guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Beijing. Her arrival at the club a few months prior sparked everyone's curiosity, and she was therefore invited to share about Rotary in Barbados. Below is the submission from PP Katrina:
"Having been privileged to experience the presentations of esteemed guest speakers whose topics ranged from sustainable development in China to professional film/documentary makers, I knew the standard of guest speakers was set high.
I was pleased to share with the 30 + attendees at the meeting about District 7030 first to set the context before giving a good overview of my beautiful island home, one of the smallest nations in the world but one whose people and achievements belie its size.
I was beaming with pride by the time I got to the main topic of the presentation. How Rotary in Barbados serves its community. I highlighted the projects delivered by each of the clubs over the 60+ years has been in Rotary and summarized that most of our work had been concentrated in the areas related to Education and Health. However, it was our disaster relief support to our sister clubs in the region in the last 20 years, with the disaster relief when natural disasters hit our vulnerable islands, that best defined the spirit of the Rotarians in Barbados.
I ended my presentation by looking ahead at some of the projects and areas that the clubs are exploring. As we looked ahead, I took the opportunity to hype my favorite, soon-to-be-started project, Inclusive Play.
In the Q&A session while most questions revolved around the projects, there were quite a few on Barbados. Two members/visitors of the club had visited Barbados in the past and were happy to chip in, and the Barbados Ambassador to China who accompanied me as my guest at the meeting, was delighted to field the question on 'how does one get from Beijing to Barbados?'... Expect some visiting Rotarians soon."
Pictured above are some of the highlights from our Valentine's themed session held on February, 15th 2023.
The Mini Model United Nations (MUN) Assembly for secondary school students continued on Saturday, 25th February hosted by the three Rotary Clubs in Barbados. Present were 39 students from 10 schools (private and public) working together to tackle Climate Change in 35 Countries and 4 institutions. During the session the students continued to form alliances with the various country groups and forged a better understanding of the resolution that they will be debating.
The second installment of the Agrokids Grant Writing Workshop was held on Sunday, 26th February 2023 at the Baobab Towers in Warrens. This session focused on agripreneurship, train-the-trainer and facilitating versus teaching.
A warm welcome and thank you to Rotarian Dr. Annette Kenningham of the Rotary Club of Leicester, UK who proudly represented her club as shown here in the exchange of banners with President Brian.
Our visiting Rotary International President Jennifer and PIS Nick arrived on February 22nd, 2023 and were warmly received by our welcoming team.
The article above was taken from the Nation Newspaper on February 25th. As part of Rotary's 118th anniversary celebrations the Rotary Clubs of Barbados hosted the president of Rotary International Jennifer Jones, who toured local projects. Pictured are DG Leslie Ramdhanny (left), Rotary International President Jennifer Jones (centre), and our very own ADG Peter Thompson (right).
Rotary International President, Jennifer Jones and her delegation met with Prime Minister of Barbados, The Hon. Mia Mottley during her visit to Barbados this week.
Members and guests gathered on February 23rd to observe the unveiling of another Peace Monument, this time at Queen's College. This was a collaboration between the Rotaractors, Interactors and our club and formed part of February's Peace building and Conflict Prevention activities that coincided with Rotary International President Jennifer Jones' visit to Barbados.
Dinner celebrating 118 years of Rotary hosted by the Rotary Clubs in Barbados with featured speaker RI President Jennifer Jones held at Mahogany Ridge, February 23, 2023.
Pictured above is a continuation of some of the highlights from the dinner celebrating 118 years of Rotary hosted by the Rotary Clubs in Barbados.
Pictured above are members from our club and guest that participated in the Feeding the Needy initiative held on February 27th in Independence Square, Bridgetown. A special commendation was made by RCBS founding member Prakash Mahtani as all the meals were lovingly prepared with the hands of our fellow Rotarians.
Like tens of thousands of Turks and Syrians who lost their homes and belongings but managed to escape with their lives, Ahmet İlker Suat, president of the Rotary Club of Gaziantep-Alleben, has no place to go. He sleeps in his car with his daughter and wife.
Within hours of the earthquake, RI President Jennifer Jones communicated with the affected Rotary districts and encouraged governors there to apply for grants from the Disaster Response Fund and share information about their relief efforts, so Rotary can amplify the calls for support.
