Membership and New Club Development Month started with fellowship and Education

On Emancipation Day, August 1st, 2024, Club members, friends and family visited the Enslaved Burial Ground in Newton, Christ Church.  Mr. Kevin Farmer historian and Deputy Director of the Barbados Museum guided us through the history and significance of the burial site.

Between the 1630s and full emancipation in 1838 thousands of slaves were buried in unmarked graves in unconsecrated plantation cemeteries throughout the island. Newton Slave Burial Ground is the largest and earliest slave burial ground discovered in Barbados. Evidence suggests that this was the final resting place of nearly six hundred enslaved men, women and children who endured brutal plantation slavery in that area.

In the 1970’s, excavation revealed valuable archaeological information of slave life in Barbados. Artefacts found here, including jewelry and eating utensils are on display at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society.

This gently sloping landscape has be airmarked as the site adjacent to which a heritage district and an associated monument will be erected to further develop and commemorate the area.

This amazing fellowship experience was the most fitting way to start Emancipation Day.

Vocational Tour to Mount Gay Distillery and Oxford Estate

We were treated to an amazing adventure by our very own Director Jacklyn Broomes on what was her penultimate day as Sustainability Manager at Mount Gay and it is safe to say that everyone who attended was both educated and entertained.

The tour started at Oxford Estate where we were appraised of the history, agronomy and contribution of the estate and the varieties grown there to the Mount Gay Product line.  We had the opportunity to crush 2 varieties of cane, in order to compare the expressed cane juice.  We were able to walk away with okras that were grown as part of their vegetable production and of course a sample of the Mount Gay Rum.  PP Trevor won a bottle of Mount Gay honey as he was able to recognize, Grantley Hurley; King of the crop for 19 consecutive years.

After we left Oxford Estate, the tour continued at the distillery where we visited the water source; a well which has been in active use by Mount Gay Distillery from the very beginning of its production and the adjacent bee hives and orchard that form part of the Mount Gay sustainability initiative. We also visited the molasses storage area and the stills where we had the opportunity to sample local and imported molasses.  Along the way, we were treated to the history and ambiance of the facilities.  We visited the sugar mill that was installed to produce the specialty molasses produced from canes grown only at Oxford estate that go into the production of the premium product that is Mount Gay Single Estate Rum. Our tour ended in the bond where the rum is aged.  It was a truly amazing experience to witness the rum production process from the field to the bottle as well as all the other peripheral activities.   Thank you Director Jacklyn for an awesome adventure.

On August 12th the Rotary Clubs of Barbados delivered a second donation of essential supplies to the fisherfolk of Oistins and Bridgetown aiding in their repair of vessels that were damaged by Hurricane Beryl.  The three Rotary Club Presidents and ADG Paul Ashby were again on hand to witness the handover.

This second batch of supplies were purchased at a discount from Fiberpol, was made possible by a generous donation of $30,000 from the Cave Shephard Group.

Thanks to our first donation, repairs have been started on 17 vessels.  Together we continue to make a meaningful contribution to our community.
