Model United Nations (MUN) 2025

Another installation of the Model United Nations joint project was held on March 15th at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.   The delegate for the Russian Federation, Diamond Jones of Harrison College emerged as the winner in a keenly contested UN security Council Meeting entitled War and Peace.

After a grueling 7 weeks of preparation, the students turned out ready to show that they were well prepared for the challenge ahead.  Many of the students were dressed in culturally representative outfits in the national colours of the country they represented.  Their knowledge and delivery left nothing to be desired as was made clear by the unprecedented 7 way tie for second place. In alphabetical order by country, the delegates for the African Union (Shakai Simpson of The St Michael School), Belgium (Damini Christie of The Christ Church Foundation School), India (Janae Herbert of The St Michael School), Israel (Serenity Miller of Harrison College), Kenya (Romarr Corbin of The St Michael School), Lebanon (Zahra Diagne of Harrison College) and Palestine (Dominique Alleyne of Queen's College) represented the 7 way tie.

This tremendous execution was no easy task.  The three rotary clubs of Barbados joined forces with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and the United Nation Mission in Barbados to host the 13th installation of MUN. This year the biggest cohort was managed as the team hosted 45 students from 13 secondary schools.  Under the outstanding leadership of PP Lisa, PDG Sonya and PDG David, this enormous task was executed flawlessly.  Well done team!  The high standard of engagement by the students is testimony to the effectiveness of this effort.

Previous Meeting Details

Wednesday March 5th 12:30pm In-Person

At this meeting Rotaract VP Krystal Walcott visited us to invite Rotarians to the activities that were planned by Rotaract for the upcoming Rotaract week ( March 8-15).

Director Glyne shared a demonstration on how to navigate Club Runner as well as a few Club Admin basics.

We hosted 5 guests; Tom and Jackie Swainland from the Rotary club of London who are known to the club and prospective members Wendel Scantlebury, Kurt Yarde and Martina Toby.

Wednesday March 12th 12:30pm Zoom

The meeting on March 12th was a business meeting.  Before the start of the meeting, Director Ryan asked a few Rotarians about club projects to determine whether Rotarians were aware of all the projects or activities in which the club is involved.

Once the meeting began, President Terry indicated that the board was concerned that sometimes Rotarians are not particularly well informed about projects and indicated that information on the projects will be circulated to remedy this situation.  She emphasized that we have a lot of activity coming up that will require Rotarians to volunteer to assist.

She continued by giving us updates on the Agrokids project as we have added new schools and the humanitarian visit by Rotarians from district 5280 will involve the construction of greenhouses, the potting of plants and general beautification of the greenhouse area of 2 Agrokids schools. President Terry went on to indicate that we have funding for aquaponics systems at 3 schools.

In addition to Agrokids and aquaponics, we need volunteers to reach out to new schools as we have funding to cover Social and Emotional Learning projects at 4 schools.  We also need to assist with planting of seedlings and painting of benches for the Butterfly Haven Project at Andromeda Botanic Gardens.

The first shipment of supplies for the QEH project is due to arrive in Barbados on March 17th.  The final of Model UN is scheduled to occur at LESC on Saturday March 15th and Rotarians are encouraged to attend.

Princess Margaret Secondary school has approached the club as they are interested in starting an interact club.  The process and paperwork has started.  The club has been approved by the district Governor and the documents have been forwarded to Rotary International for final approval.

Director Ryan then spoke about the project with the orthopedic shoes for diabetics.  This project was introduced to us by Dr. Simone McConnie who addressed the club in the past and is being undertaken as a collaborative effort between Samaritan Feet, The Barbados Diabetes Association and Save our Soles.  Over 4000 pairs of shoes have been imported and are currently being sorted.  These shoes will eventually be distributed to people in need of diabetic footwear after their proper sizing is ascertained.  Director Ryan asked Rotarians to contact Director Shem to volunteer to assist with sorting, storage, sizing and distribution of the shoes.

Given that it was Rotaract week, President Resheena Homer of Rotaract South addressed the club to inform us of the schedule of activities and invite Rotarians to participate.

Wednesday March 19th 6:30pm Zoom

After the usual opening formalities, President Terry gave us a summary of the current club activities.  She shared the status of the project for the distribution of the orthopedic shoes (further developed later in the bulletin).

Director Glyne informed the club of the collaborative effort between Club Admin and Public Image to procure new shirts.  We will have two options
1.We can bring in our own oxford shirts to be embroidered with the club logo. Additionally
2.We will have dri fit polo shirts from Outhouse Solutions for purchase.
There is a 6-8week lead time on delivery in each case.  He promised to email Rotarians with details and fitting guides. We expect to receive a sizing pack for guidance.

Director Glyne also did a short demo on how to contribute to Rotary International, as well as how to generate your contribution report.  Director Ryan reiterated the value of our contributions to grant access by the club.  He encouraged Rotarians to become sustaining members to assist the club in reaching our 50% sustaining members target.

President Terry informed us of the upcoming painting of the tennis courts at Queen's College by the Interact Club.  She further indicated that the Interact Club at Princess Margaret Secondary is in the process of formation.

The second shipment of supplies for the QEH was expected to arrive in Barbados on March 19th. There will be an official presentation, such that the sponsors who contributed to the project can be acknowledged and see what their contributions have procured.

The Butterfly Haven project is close to completion.  The 3 benches have been primed and are awaiting our arrival for painting.  Seven pots have been planted but 3 others have been filled with soil and will be planted by Rotarians.

Progress is being made on the provision of shade houses for 4 schools.  Two should be completed before the humanitarian visit by Rotarians from district 5280 while 2 others will be completed when they arrive.  Work has started on the establishment of one of the aquaponics systems.

Wednesday March 26th 12:30pm In-Person

Congratulations to Director Kerryann on being featured in the public lecture entitled "This is my Story" and the launch of her new book

Orthopedic Shoes for Diabetics

We have mostly completed the sorting of the orthopedic shoes which were donated by Othofeet via Samaritan Feet to the diabetic community in Barbados.  Subsequently, Rotarians and other volunteers were trained by Dr. Simone McConnie and her team in the proper fitting of these shoes as well as the assessment of the feet in order to allow us to identify any issues that may require referral.

Butterfly Haven at Andromeda Gardens

Our contribution to the establishment of a pollinator haven at Andromeda Botanic Gardens is finally complete.

With the assistance of a district grant, The Rotary Club of Barbados South contributed to the establishment of a pollinator haven at Andromeda Botanic Gardens.

The infinity deck is meant to be a relaxation zone from which patrons can sit and observe the butterflies in the new butterfly haven without disturbing the main gardens which they occupy.  RCBS sponsored three benches for the infinity deck as well as 10 pots that were planted along the border.  The concrete pots border the infinity deck for the safety of visitors.  They are planted with flowering plants that encourage and support the feeding and reproduction of the butterflies.  Butterflies from the pollinator garden are therefore encouraged to visit and occupy the pots bordering the infinity deck to be closer to the patrons.

On Saturday March 29th a few Rotarians visited the gardens in order to paint the donated benches and pot the seedlings in the three remaining pots.  Butterflies were already visible on the deck as the plants that were previously potted were already flowering.

Princess Margaret Secondary School Joins Rotary

The 2024/25 Rotary year is a year of significant beginnings at Princess Margaret Secondary School.  Under the guidance of Ms. Marisa Greenidge, a teacher at the school, Princess Margaret Secondary became the newest member of the Rotary Family.

For the first time, students of the school participated in the Model United Nations program that is a joint project of the 3 Rotary clubs of Barbados.  The 5 students demonstrated commitment and dedication as they definitely made their school proud.  Each week, their teacher, Ms. Greenidge, attended the sessions, such that she would be aware of the required content to allow her to assist her students where required.  In the final analysis it was entirely worth the effort as each of her students represented themselves and their school in a manner that is worthy of the highest praise.

T'mar Jordan - Ethiopia
Larissa Weekes - Germany
Santeeno Payne - Qatar

Their participation in MUN was just the beginning of their association with us as they demonstrated keen interest in the establishment of an interact club at their school.  The Rotary club of Barbados South had meetings with the Principal and teachers, then made the application on behalf of the school.  The application was approved by the District Governor and forwarded to Rotary international for final approval.  Permission was given to make preparations for the start of the club.

On Tuesday March 25th 2025 Princess Margaret Secondary School hosted its first Interact Club meeting.  PDG Sonya, Pres Terry, PP Marcel and Dir Kemi were in attendance.

Bridgetown Feeding
Another successful Bridgetown feeding was held in Independence Square on March 31st.  Extra special thanks to Director Mechelle Lewis, Rotarian Maurice Bailey and Rotarian Courtney Ramsay who sponsored the meals on behalf of RCBS.  We served a total of 108 meals.  A heavy downpour near the end of the session prevented us from having a proper group photo this month but as usual PP Prakash made sure that we had a couple of images.

We are particularly thrilled with the growing core of Rotarians who have been coming out to assist.    The fellowship is amazing and the efficiency of this group makes for smooth and seamless execution.  We appreciate you all!  Thank you for your support of and assistance with such a vitally important project.  None of this will be possible without you.

Nobel Laureate leads the Speaker Roster for 2025 Rotary International Convention

The first woman from the Arab world to win the Nobel Peace Prize will address Rotary International’s 2025 convention, which takes place from 21-25 June in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Tawakkol Karman has endured persecution and imprisonment for speaking out in favor of democracy and women’s empowerment.

“In the most trying circumstances, both before and during the Arab Spring, Karman has played a leading part in the struggle for women’s rights and for democracy in Yemen,” said Thorbjørn Jagland, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, announcing the Nobel Prize in 2011. Karman shared the award with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Leymah Gbowee.

A journalist and human rights activist, Karman organized numerous protests against the repressive regime of Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh from 2007-2011, acquiring the nicknames “mother of the revolution” and “the iron woman.” In 2005 she founded Women Journalists Without Chains, which trains journalists, reports on efforts to silence the media, and promotes women’s rights.

“‘Women’s rights’ means democracy, means freedom of expression, means freedom to choose your ruler,” Karman said at the 2023 Munich Security Conference. She says Western governments have supported anti-revolutionary efforts in the Middle East, undermining democratic movements in the region.

Karman also founded the Peaceful Revolutionary Youth Council. During the Arab Spring movement in the early 2010s, she called for peaceful dialogue rather than violence and worked for reconciliation between Shia and Sunni Muslims. She believes Islam should peacefully coexist with other religions and that it presents no barrier to women’s full participation in every sphere of society.

Time magazine included Karman on a list of 17 of “History’s Most Rebellious Women” and named her one of its 100 Women of the Year in 2011. Foreign Policy magazine has included her among its Top 100 Global Thinkers. The Tawakkol Karman Foundation builds schools, fights poverty, and supports health care in Yemen.

Celebrating World Rotaract Week 2025: Together in Fellowship, Strengthened Through Service

From March 8–15, Rotaractors across Barbados came together to celebrate World Rotaract Week 2025 under the inspiring theme "Together in Fellowship, Strengthened Through Service."

The week began with "Breaking Bread," a feeding initiative by the Rotaract Club of Barbados, bringing meals and care to those in need. The official kickoff followed with a church service at Calvary Moravian Church, where a donation was made to the Young People’s Society in support of their initiatives.

Two membership drives were hosted to energize efforts to grow the Rotaract family, and welcome fresh faces into the clubs. Members also supported an exchange meeting with the Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunset, fostering regional cross-club collaboration and shared learning.

Fellowship was in full swing during the scenic island bus tour and games day, creating moments of joy and connection. The week wrapped up on a high note with a powerful Next Level Leadership Workshop hosted by Chadderton Research & Development, equipping participants with tools needed to support emotional intelligence, stress management, self-confidence, and team leadership.

World Rotaract Week 2025 reflected the spirit of unity, growth, and service that defines Rotaract.
