 Spotlight News

Rotary Club of Barbados South

The Month of July has been dominated by response to the impact of Hurricane Beryl on St. Vincent, Grenada, the Grenadines and Barbados.

The CDEMA relief and logistics cell set up a transshipment hub at the Barbados Port Inc to package boxes of food supplies to dispatch to the most severely affected areas.  In the spirit of "People of Action" Rotarians and Rotaractors responded to the call to assist with the packing of 5000 boxes of much needed supplies.

Assistance to Fisherfolk in Bridgetown and Oistins

The three Rotary Clubs of Barbados raised a total of $25,000 to assist fisherfolk affected by hurricane Beryl. In addition, $5,000 was also donated by the Oistins Fish Festival Association (OFFA) bringing the total to $30,000.

The funds were used to purchase materials at cost price from Fiberpol; to assist with the repair of fishing vessels that were damaged during the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

Representatives were present from the Fisher Folk communities, as well as OFFA and Fiberpol. President Terry Hall was at the handover along with President Greg Hazzard from RC West and President Arlene Ross from RC Barbados. Rotarian Nikita Gibson (PIS of PP Brian Lashley) was present in a dual capacity as Co Chair of OFFA as well as representing RC Barbados. The handover was facilitated by AG Paul Ashby.

Another successful Bridgetown feeding was held in Independence Square on July 29th 2024.  Special thanks to PP Nigel Adams, PHF Rose Clarke and Rtn. Malcolm Mapp  for providing the meals from RCBS.  President Terry came out with her family along with the usual suspects PP Prakash Mahtani, Rtn Maurice Bailey, Rtn Josephine Robinson and Dir Kemi Brewster.  Rotarian Mark Thompson from RCBW was also in attendance and provided meals.
Out of sight but not out of mind!  PP George made a special effort to visit our very own Rotarian the Honorable Cleviston Haynes who is on foreign mission in Ireland.  Hopefully they didn't get up to too much mischief :)
Rotary International
The July theme for Rotary International was Maternal & Child Health.

Every year Rotary makes high-quality health care available to vulnerable mothers and children so they can live longer and grow stronger.

We expand access to quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a healthy future. An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation — all of which can be prevented.

Rotary reaches mothers and children in need, providing education, immunizations, birth kits, and mobile health clinics. Women in communities are provided with help and training they need to take control of their own maternal and infant health care. They are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.
Together, let’s make a difference in the lives of mothers and children worldwide.

A New tool to end Cervical Cancer

Rotarian brings promising screening technology to Kenya

As a retired surgical oncologist, I’m in the region to deliver a new screening program that detects cervical cancer in its early stages and to perform surgery at Matibabu Hospital in the Lake Victoria region. My visit is part of a Rotary project to prevent cervical cancer, the most common cause of mortality for women throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.
