District 7030 Conference 2025

The recently concluded District Conference in Trinidad was an amazing demonstration of the excellence and exemplary work that is Rotary.  There were 17 participants from Barbados of which 8 were from RCBS. Our club did us proud this year as we were repeatedly recognized for our performance in the district.

In a District with 77 clubs from 17 countries, RCBS was able to achieve the following:

District Grants:  This year, a total of 17 grants were issued; three of which were obtained by Rotary Club of Barbados South and one to Rotaract Club of South Barbados.

Membership: RCBS was one of 11 clubs that was able to sustain membership in the 50+ category

Public Image:  RCBS was one of 18 clubs to have achieved Platinum level for excellence in public image.  Our projects were featured numerous times among those that were able to obtain publication by traditional media.

Foundation:  We were able to achieve 100% EREY.  Additionally, we were one of the 11 clubs with per capita contribution to the annual fund of over $100.  Special thank you to those who actually contribute to the fund and make this possible, as this is how we are able to qualify for grant funding.

Environment:  The district Operation Pollination Initiative was reactivated for another project cycle, as a result, the documents had to be reissued and signed.  Given that RCBS received a district grant for our effort at Andromeda Botanic Gardens, RCBS was asked to provide one of the signatories to the document.  President Terry signed on our behalf, along with Rotary International Director Patrick Eakes, the current and next 3 District Governors.

Projects: Our Social and Emotional Learning Project was one of the projects that was selected to be featured at the conference. With a clear and concise video explanation by Mr. Olton of CiSEL; President Terry did an excellent presentation.

Celebrity Presence: Our very own Rtn Graham, did us proud as he co-hosted one of the sessions. While Director KerryAnn did an impressive presentation on diversity, equity and inclusion.

Lastly and as usual most impressively, our resident celebrity our PDG Sonya did us proud yet again.  As usual, she made a significant contribution to the PELS sessions by being one of the learning facilitators.  Additionally, she moderated an interview with future leaders that gave us good insight into their motivation as Rotarians.  Of more significant note however was her recognition as one of 8 female Rotary leaders to be featured in a time capsule to empower girls.

As if that was not sufficient, PDG Sonya made a presentation on the Inter-Country Committee; Great Britain and Ireland and the Caribbean. In fine style again, our PDG signed the charter as she is the ICC National Coordinator for the Caribbean.  All in all, we were proud RCBS members as we witnessed all of this first hand.  Well done team!!

Previous Meeting Details

Wednesday April 2nd 6:30pm In-Person

At this meeting we welcomed 5 guests. Rotarian Penelope Tompkins and her PIS Michael of the Rotary Club of South Burlington in Vermont USA, visited us after being told about our club by fellow Rotarian Rich who is no stranger to our club. They were excited to meet us as they have heard a lot of good things about our club and projects from Rotarian Rich.

Our other guests were Prospective member Wendel Scantlebury who has been attending our meetings as a guest of Treasurer Dion, Johnette Reece, guest of Rotarian Rose and President Elect of the Rotary Club of Barbados West, Andre Wharton.

Wendel addressed the club to tell us a bit about himself.  We are trying this new practice as some of our fellowship is lost when we engage in online meetings and it takes a longer time for members of the club to be familiar with prospective members.

PE Andre gave us an overview of the schedule of activities planned for the Rotarians from district 5280 who will be in Barbados for a humanitarian visit.  PE Jacklyn filled in the specific role of our club. The full schedule will be circulated.

Directors Glyne and Mechelle explained the ordering process for the new club shirts and encouraged Rotarians to use the circulated form to place their order at the earliest convenience.

During the announcements, President Terry invited Rotarians to participate in the Launch of the Orthopedic shoe project scheduled for April 4th as well as the painting of the road tennis courts at Queen's College in support of their interact club also on April 4th.  She also shared the invitation from Andromeda botanic gardens to join in the  "We Gathering" event on April 20th which is themed "Majestic Monarchs" and will lead to the infinity deck where our pollinator project is based.

Wednesday April 9th 12:30pm Zoom

This meeting was a business meeting and was intended to update Rotarians on the activities of the club and the latest on projects.

*  The launch of the Orthopedic shoe project went well.  It was featured in the Nation Newspaper and Barbados Today.  We were commended for our efficiency.  The next step is the distribution of the remaining 3,950 pairs of shoes.

*  2 podiatrists will be visiting the club in April to speak with us about Diabetic Foot in children.

*  We were invited to an Easter Sunday "We Gathering" event at Andromeda Botanic Gardens with tours that will include the Infinity Deck on which our butterfly haven project is located.

*  QC Interact club has completed the painting of their road tennis courts using the paint that was presented to them by Director Kemi (last month's bulletin).

*  Princess Margaret Secondary is yet to receive their certification but is now listed as an interact club and was assigned a number.

* The district 5280 engagement on May 2nd now involves 3 locations.  We will erect shade houses at Luther Thorne Primary and Bay Primary and we will paint/decorate trash cans at Princess Margaret Secondary.  The cans were donated by Harris Paints courtesy PDG Sonya and forms the first project of the new Interact club.

*  2 of the 3 shipments of items for the QEH project have arrived.  The outstanding one contains the 2 Kangaroo chairs.  As soon as they arrive and are cleared, Dr Jennings will notify us such that we can host an event to officially hand over the items.  This event will include and acknowledge our sponsors.

*  We have received funding from Ross University to cover the cost of CPR training and the burn unit for children

*  The Aquaponics and Agrokids projects are accelerating as we have funding for 3 aquaponics systems, 2 from the district and 1 from M E Murrel and Assoc.  We also have funding for 4 shade houses, 2 by First Citizens Bank (currently under construction) and 2 by District 5280 (to be constructed on May 2nd).

George Lamming Primary
Luther Thorne Primary

*  The club has agreed to assist the President Elect of Rotaract Club of South Barbados, Melanie Trotman to attend the Rotaract District Conference in Suriname at the end of June.

*  Our signature fundraiser  Summer Luau cruise is scheduled to be held on May 24th.  Rotarians will be contacted by a member of the committee regarding the sale/purchase of tickets.

* The club has made a donation of $25US to the Rotary Foundation on behalf of each member in order to achieve our 100% EREY contribution.

Wednesday April 16th 6:30pm Zoom

The main focus of this meeting was to update the club on the upcoming activities and responsibilities associated with the  hosting of 66 Rotarians from district 5280.

The visit and associated project activities are fully sponsored by District 5280 except for the packed lunches we will provide to them on the day on which we host them.  RCBS will be responsible for covering the cost of lunch.

Rotarians were encouraged to volunteer to assist with the cost of the meals as well as the execution of the project on the day.

Wednesday April 23rd 12:30pm In-Person

Our guest speakers at this meeting were Podiatrists Stephanie Beute and Adrian Mullah.  These podiatrists gave us another perspective on foot care as they focused primarily on children with diabetes but also paid attention to foot care in children generally.

The presentation was interactive as members engaged with the presenters throughout the presentation. Even though the primary focus was children, the foot care tips they gave were also relevant to adults.

Also present was a young guest Nicholas Trotman who has Type 1 Diabetes.  He found the presentation enlightening and was happy to have participated.

The podiatrists were excited with the club’s involvement and participation in the Orthopedic Footwear and Limb Salvage Project. They were also found it commendable that we were not just involved with the project but we were interested in acquiring more knowledge in the area, as such they were extremely happy to engage us on diabetic foot and general foot care in children.

Wednesday April 30th

During this meeting Rotarians who attended the District Conference were invited to give their impression of the event and their experiences.  All in all everyone was impressed with the planning, education and interactions they experienced.  Of particular note was the number of times Barbados and Barbadians were showcased throughout the event.  Special mention of the presentations by PDG Sonya, President Terry, Director Kerryann and PHF Graham.  Details of our recognition are given earlier in the bulletin.

The activities planned for the visiting Rotarians were indicated and Rotarians were invited to participate as their schedules allow.  The link to register for social events is also included above in the upcoming events section.

As regards the Luau Cruise.  We now have tickets in hand so Rotarians will soon be contacted to purchase tickets. President Terry encouraged everyone to give their support to the event.

Launch of the Project to Provide Orthopedic Shoes to Diabetics in Barbados

On April 4th a few of our members proudly represented the club at the press launch and first fitting for the Samaritan Feet orthopedic shoe distribution project — an initiative to provide 4,000 orthopedic shoes to diabetics across Barbados.

This impactful effort is championed locally by Dr. Simone McConnie. Our club’s involvement focuses on volunteering time to support the distribution and fitting process, aligning perfectly with Rotary’s area of focus on disease prevention and treatment.

The event was well attended, with remarks from the Founders of Samaritan Feet, Emmanuel “Manny” and Tracie Ohonme, officials from the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and other partner organizations. Over 70 persons were present.

Thanks to all who participated. We look forward to continued support as the initiative progresses.

Joint meeting with the Rotary Club of South Burlington, Vermont USA

After repeated visits from Rotarian Rich and the recent visit by Rotarian Penny and her PIS, we were invited to join the meeting of the Rotary Club of South Burlington virtually.

On April 10th at 7:30am we connected via zoom to participate in their meeting where President Terry was the guest speaker.  They were keen on hearing about our club and our projects.  President Terry did us proud as she gave an excellent presentation outlining our various projects and activities.

Rotarian Rich announced that our banner, which he received when he attended our vocational awards, will be added to their 3rd club quilt as the club makes the banners they receive into magnificent quilts.

The Rotary Club of South Burlington made a donation of $500US to our club, to be spent on youth activity and expressed interest  in continuing to maintain a relationship with our club.

Special thanks to Director Carrie-Ann for triggering this wonderful connection by the simple act of including her colleague in our club activities.

District 5280 Humanitarian Visit

Most of the reporting on this visit will occur in the May issue of the bulletin, however we have already received 60 backpacks with supplies as a gift from District 5280 to our back to school program.  The backpacks were presented to us by District 5280 Governor Albert Hernandez.

Bridgetown Feeding
Another successful Bridgetown feeding was held in Independence Square on April 28th.  Extra special thanks to PDG Sonya, PP Irving and Dir Carrie-Ann who sponsored the meals on behalf of RCBS.  We served a total of 92 meals.

We are particularly thrilled with the growing core of Rotarians who have been coming out to assist.    The fellowship is amazing and the efficiency of this group makes for smooth and seamless execution.  We appreciate you all!  Thank you for your support of and assistance with such a vitally important project.  None of this will be possible without you.

Thousands set to gather in Calgary for Rotary’s international convention, one of the ‘Blue Sky City’s’ most multicultural events to date

Rotary members from 120 countries will be welcomed to Canada’s third most diverse city for the second time since Calgary hosted the event in 1996

More than 15,000 Rotary members and participants from over 120 countries will gather in Calgary from June 21 to 25, 2025, for the membership service organization’s annual international convention.

“I am thrilled to welcome my fellow Rotary members from around the world to Calgary and Alberta,” said Alberta Premier, Danielle Smith. “As changemakers who recognize the needs of their communities and then take action to address them, Rotary members are fostering positive and lasting impact – and much needed inspiration at this moment in time.”

Held in a different city each year, Rotary’s international conventions serve as a hub for members and participants to connect and learn from each other and a range of experts on how to take action to address issues in their communities. They’re encouraged to promote health, peace, and prosperity in communities across the globe.

Often described by attendees as a “mini United Nations”, the convention will transform the BMO Centre and Scotiabank Saddledome at Stampede Park into an energized hub and cultural mosaic as the global network of volunteers gain inspiration from more than 100 humanitarian projects on exhibit and from world class speakers.

“Rotary conventions are about bringing people together to create meaningful connections and to inspire each other to help create a healthier and more peaceful world,” said Rotary International President, Stephanie Urchick. “We are delighted to be hosting the convention this year in Calgary, whose ‘Blue Sky City’ brand is a symbol of belonging and unity under the same sky – something that resonates with our global network of volunteers, and our common values rooted in service. I’m excited to reconnect with so many friends from across the globe in Calgary to celebrate in the joy we bring through our work, and to learn how we can continue to help people and communities thrive in the future.”

"Rotary has long been an integral part of Calgary's culture, and we are truly honoured to welcome more than 15,000 members back to our city. Since hosting the convention over two decades ago, Calgary has grown and evolved in remarkable ways,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “Now one of Canada’s most diverse cities, with 240 ethnic communities and 165 languages, Rotary members from more than 120 countries will feel at home in our big city with smalltown appeal."

Organized by Rotary International in conjunction with local Rotary members, the event presents an opportunity to showcase Calgary's growing tech and creative sectors, diverse cultural representation and the gateway to the majestic Canadian Rockies. The Rotary International Convention in Calgary is supported by Tourism Calgary, The City of Calgary, the Calgary Hotel Association, Calgary Stampede, BMO Centre, Scotiabank Saddledome, and Rotary members in Calgary and from Alberta, across Canada, and around the world.

Quote attributable to Tourism Calgary CEO, Alisha Reynolds
"We are thrilled to be welcoming the Rotary International Convention to our vibrant ‘Blue Sky City’ in June,” said Tourism Calgary President and CEO, Alisha Reynolds. “Bringing conventions like Rotary to our city has many positive impacts for our local tourism industry, economy, and community – we are excited to showcase all our city has to offer and to welcoming delegates with our world-renowned friendly hospitality, creating lasting connections and impacts for years to come."

Quote attributable to Calgary Hotel Association Executive Director, Sol Zia
“Hotels across the Calgary region are very excited to welcome the more than 15,000 international Rotary members as we kick off summer in Calgary. The opportunity to host major conventions like this is critical to the economic success of our city and region, supporting the growth of our entire hospitality industry,” said Sol Zia, executive director of Calgary Hotel Association. “The Calgary Hotel Association and our member hotels will be ready to welcome our guests and to showcase the friendly hospitality our Blue Sky City is known for.”

Quote attributable to Rotary Host Organizing Committee Co-Chair, Mark Starratt
“Rotary in Calgary is thrilled to provide a ‘white hat’ welcome to all Rotary members visiting from around the world for this year’s international convention, which will provide an outstanding combination of inspiration, entertainment, and fellowship for our participants,” said Rotary Host Organizing Committee Co-Chair, Mark Starratt. “I’m excited to bring the convention back to Calgary to highlight the positive and lasting change we bring globally and locally."
