November was Rotary Foundation Month - It is when Rotary Clubs focus on the contributions that are made to the Rotary Foundation to fund the areas of focus through which Rotary does good in the world. Even though November is over, We can triple our impact.
On Tuesday December 2nd - Giving Tuesday, any contribution Rotarians make to the Foundation will be matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation. Remember to make your contribution on giving Tuesday. Help the club, the district and Rotary International to reach their giving goals while you make a difference to the lives of people all over the world. If you need assistance, please contact Director of Foundation PP Vivian-Anne or Secretary Ryan.

Previous Meeting Details
Wednesday November 5th 6:30pm In-Person Club Forum
At this meeting, Treasurer Dion presented the club financials. He gave an update of our club and charity receipts and disbursements as at September 30th. He also gave a breakdown of how our Rotary dues are allocated to the associated expenses.
PDG Sonya, our learning facilitator, gave a presentation on the club's Learning plan for 2025/26. She highlighted the learning objectives, methods, proposed schedule for the district as well as the club, assessment and online resources.
The members present then participated in a focus group exercise. The topics in discussion were; membership and culture, projects and impact and finance and sustainability. The outcome of these discussions will serve to influence the direction of the club in an attempt to enhance member engagement and overall impact.
Wednesday November 12th 12:30pm Zoom Business Meeting
The main focus of this meeting was a presentation by Director of Foundation PP Vivian-Anne in which she provided an overview of the Rotary Foundation, explaining its purpose and various giving opportunities. She discussed the Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) program, the various funds to which Rotarians can donate, and the requirements for becoming a sustaining member or Paul Harris Fellow.
PP Vivian-Anne emphasized the importance of meeting the club's foundation giving goals and encouraged members to consider contributing on Giving Tuesday, when donations are matched 2:1 by the Gates Foundation. She also highlighted the Polio Plus Society, which is managed at the district level, and encouraged members to join. She explained that while individuals don't need to be Rotarians to join the Polio Plus Society, they can support the foundation through Polio Plus Fund contributions, which not only helps us to reach Rotary's contribution goals and earn bonus points but brings us closer to the eradication of Polio.
She highlighted the foundation's impact through real projects like school building and clean water initiatives. PP Marcel inquired about drawing down funds from the foundation, to which PP Vivian-Anne explained that clubs must apply for grants through their district, which considers factors like project impact and sustainability, with district grants typically limited to $10,000 for projects that can be completed within a year. While Global Grants for bigger projects are available from the Foundation and must be applied for in conjunction with another club.
Secretary Ryan explained that while club dues include some Foundation support, individual members should continue giving, as it benefits the club by allowing us access to district grants. PP Vivian-Anne demonstrated how to make donations through MyRotary.org, including options for one-time, recurring, and Giving Tuesday contributions. The club was encouraged to maintain and even increase their strong performance in Foundation giving, with 2024/25 annual fund contributions of $9,672 and Polio Plus contributions of $5,682. President Jacklyn suggested holding a session to help members navigate MyRotary.org, as not all club members have signed up for the platform.
The conversation ended with an announcement that nominations for the 2026 Vocational Service Awards are due by December 23rd.
Wednesday November 19th- 6:30pm Zoom
At this meeting, President Jacklyn announced that the club has been awarded three district grants for various projects, including $2,500 for accessible agriculture, $3,900 for little libraries for literacy, and $4,000 for orthopedic footwear.
VP Stephen introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Kimberley King, who is the medical director and co-founder of the Longevity Clinic in Barbados. Dr. King's talk focused on the future of healthcare, emphasizing a shift from reactive disease treatment to proactive health design, integrating clinical precision with human-centered care. She discussed the growing burden of non-communicable diseases in Barbados, highlighting that poor diet and lack of physical activity are major contributors.
Dr. King explained what constitutes a whole food, plant-based diet and its benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. She provided practical tips for incorporating more plant-based foods into daily meals and emphasized that small, consistent changes can lead to significant health benefits over time. She discussed dietary guidelines, explaining that a balanced plate should be half vegetables, a quarter starches, and a quarter proteins, with the palm of your hand representing the portion of protein. She advised that combining fruits and vegetables in meals is generally fine, though some people might experience gas, which can be addressed with digestive enzymes.
The discussion after the presentation focused on the cost and accessibility of healthy eating, with Dr. King suggesting that healthy foods can be more affordable than processed options when purchased in bulk and properly utilized. President Jacklyn, an agronomist, highlighted the importance of seasonal produce and raised concerns about overconsumption of carbohydrates in plant-based diets. Dr. King emphasized the long-term health benefits of investing in healthy foods, despite their initial cost.
Dr. King shared her personal experience with coffee consumption, noting that while it can have neuroprotective benefits, it can also exacerbate acid reflux. She recommended limiting coffee intake to two small cups in the morning and emphasized the importance of using high-quality coffee. She introduced a longevity score tool that assesses overall health factors beyond nutrition. The conversation ended with a vote of thanks from Secretary Ryan, who highlighted the importance of small, consistent changes in diet for long-term health benefits.
Director of Foundation VP Vivian-Anne made a brief presentation about the Rotary Foundation's Giving Tuesday campaign during which the contributions made by Rotarians are matched 2:1 by the Gates foundation. She encouraged Rotarians to make their donations on Giving Tuesday, December 2nd. She also emphasized the opportunity for Paul Harris Fellows to become sustaining members by donating at least $100 to the annual fund.
Director Carrie-Ann announced a fellowship event for the following week, inviting members to bring a friend and share a favorite recipe to contribute to a Rotary South recipe book.
Wednesday November 26th- 12:30pm In-person Independence Fellowship and Nomination Day
At this meeting, President Jacklyn indicated that RCBS has been awarded a grant in the amount of $30,000 from the Barbados People Development and Implementation Unit for our Accessability Skills to Independence Project. This is a significant achievement as we were awarded more funds than the amount in our grant application.
At this session, Rotarians nominated the candidates for club officers for the Rotary Year 2026/27 under the supervision of our Returning Officer PP Michael Trotman.

Rotary Club of Barbados South - Spotlight
Service Clubs Fellowship Quiz
On November 24th, the Rotary Club of Barbados South was invited to participate in an independence fellowship quiz. The service clubs involved were the Kiwanis Club of Barbados South, the Lions Club of Barbados South and the Rotary Club of Barbados South. RCBS was well represented by a small team of highly competent Rotarians who made us extremely proud by ending as the overall winners. Well done team Rotary South!!!

We are expected to host the quiz in 2026 so use this year to sharpen your knowledge on all things Barbadian.
Disability Sensitivity Training
On November 22nd, Rotarians gathered at St Ann's Fort for our final sensitivity session that was conducted in conjunction with the Disabilities Unit. We were given perspective on the day to day experiences of people with disabilities.
Our first session introduced us to the challenges of deaf and hearing impaired individuals. We were then taught a bit of sign language which involved the alphabet as well as a few common conversational signs.
In our second session, we learnt how blind individuals navigate the world as well as how to assist them when it is required. Finally, we were taught how to manipulate, adjust and handle wheelchairs; after which, we were shown how to lift, assist and transfer wheelchair users as well as people with mobility issues.
The session was extremely informative and should prove invaluable as we continue to attempt to lend assistance to people with disabilities as we execute our "Breaking Barriers" agenda.

Tree Planting on the East Coast
On November 29th the Rotary Club of Barbados South, the Rotaract Club of South Barbados and the Interact Club of Princess Margaret Secondary School got together to plant 400 trees along the east coast of Barbados.
This was the continuation of an initiative which started in 2023/24 Rotary year under the presidency of PP Marcell. We planted a total of 280 sea grapes and 120 coconut trees. This was followed by fellowship over breakfast.
A huge thank you to PP Marcel for coordinating this worthwhile initiative.

Bridgetown Feeding
Individuals who assisted at Bridgetown Feeding. PS. We neglected to get a proper photo lol
Another successful installation of Bridgetown feeding was completed on November 24th 2025. PP Marcel, Rtn Glyne and Sec Ryan provided the meals on behalf of RCBS. We were able to serve a total of 108 meals as well as 20 sets of Independence treats even though we only received 36 meals from RCBW and not the usual 54.
This was because our friend Natasha Thakurdin and her daughter Erica joined us with an additional 18 meals as a form of service to celebrate her 50th birthday, and Rtn Mario brought us 20 boxes of Bajan treats in recognition of Barbados' Independence.
Thank you to everyone who came out to assist. Rotarians Glyne, Denise, Mario, Ryan, Morexa and PP's Terry and Prakash. This project makes a significant impact on the lives of needy Barbadians and none of this will be possible without you.
The Rotary Foundation is proud to announce that we have recently received a four-star rating — the highest level possible — for the 17th consecutive year from Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator in the United States.
We owe this success to the unwavering support and dedication of individuals like you. Thank you for being a crucial part of what makes our Foundation a powerful force for meaningful change and lasting impact through service.
Charity Navigator determines its ratings by examining how nonprofits use their funds, how sustainable their programs are, and how well they adhere to industry standards of transparency and accountability. You can learn more about how Rotary does that in our most recent annual report.
Your support of The Rotary Foundation inspires others and directly makes a difference with initiatives around the world as well as projects based in your local community.
