The three Rotary clubs in Barbados annually host a Mini Model United Nations Assembly for secondary school students.  The Model United Nations exposes students to the topical international issues being addressed by the international community, creates awareness of the substantive considerations attached to those issues as well as the respective country positions taken, based on unique national interests by different countries in the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Students act as representatives from different countries and together seek resolutions on relevant issues. It is an extraordinary opportunity for students to become immersed in the workings of a multilateral environment.

For thirteen years, the Rotary Clubs of Barbados have proudly invested in this most meaningful youth development initiatives on our island. This programme continues to stand as a testament to Rotary’s commitment to empowering young people and preparing them to become thoughtful leaders, informed citizens, and global thinkers.

Through Model United Nations, students are given the unique opportunity to step into the role of diplomats. They research global issues, represent countries, engage in debate, negotiate resolutions, and collaborate with their peers. In the process, they develop critical skills in public speaking, diplomacy, leadership, and problem-solving that will serve them throughout their lives and careers.

Perhaps even more importantly, MUN helps young people understand that their voices matter. It encourages them to think beyond their immediate surroundings and consider the challenges and opportunities facing our global community. It nurtures confidence, builds awareness, and inspires purpose.

This programme reflects Rotary’s core belief in investing in youth as a pathway to building stronger communities and a more peaceful world. Many past participants have gone on to become leaders in their schools, professions, and communities, carrying forward the values of service and responsible leadership that Rotary promotes.

For 7 weeks, Rotarians and coordinators are at UN House, mentoring youth from various secondary schools across Barbados as they prepare for the final plenary session at week 8.  With all the exchanges around the globe related to tariffs, the focus this year 2026, is on the World Trade Organization.

We invite all schools, parents and students to follow the Rotary in Barbados Model United Nations Face Book page to see the journey of our student leaders into the world of international relations.
